Jurors in Merck & Co.'s Vioxx trial awarded $4.5 million to a 77-year-old New Jersey man after determining that the drug, a painkiller, contributed to his heart attack. The company also failed to provide any warning that Vioxx causes increased cardiovascular risk. It has been determined that the drug causes heart risk to people who take it for more than 18 months.
